Athens Academy Model UN Team Performs Well at Conference
Tuesday, February 1st, 2022
Athens Academy’s Model United Nations team spent January 29-30, 2022, participating in the annual high school Model UN conference hosted by the UGA collegiate team. Over 300 students from high schools from across Georgia were in attendance. Athens Academy’s team included 29 students representing the countries of Mexico and Pakistan, in addition to several individual roles in the “crisis committees.”
This year sets two new records for the Athens Academy Model UN team: most individual awards (12 students recognized) and our first delegation award, Distinguished Large Delegation. This award is considered second place in the overall conference. In addition, senior Brayden Edmonds was named Best Delegate for the Bermuda Triangle Crisis Committee; this is only the second time in Athens Academy Model UN history that a student has won this award.

They made our weekly practices fun and cheerfully engaged the research and procedural practice necessary to prepare for conference.” She continues, “Every time I visited the committee rooms, our students were engaged and working hard to address real, complex global issues. It was most gratifying to see their good work recognized during the Closing Ceremonies.”
Dr. Turney also celebrates the leadership on this team: “As you can see, this year's team was led by an extraordinarily gifted group of seniors. It has been a joy to work with many of them for multiple seasons, and they will be greatly missed next year.”
