Athens-Clarke Commission Committee Wants Broader Look at Downtown Area Improvements

Athens-Clarke County’s failure to get an acceptable bid for a downtown Athens infrastructure project is prompting a county commission committee to ask for a wider approach to making improvements to the downtown area.

At their Wednesday meeting, members of the Downtown Master Plan Committee chaired by Commissioner Mike Hamby decided to ask the full commission to direct the county’s Special-Purpose Local Option Sales Tax management office to re-examine the downtown business district with an eye toward developing concepts to make the streets more pedestrian-friendly, change traffic patterns by possibly converting one-way streets into two-way thoroughfares and boost the area’s aesthetic appeal. The SPLOST office administers projects approved by Athens-Clarke County voters for funding with a 1 percent local sales tax.
