Georgia's new Adolescent Literacy Playbook calls on every teacher, to build students' reading and writing skills. At Fort Valley Middle School, that approach is already part of daily life.

The playbook is guidance from the Georgia Department of Education for school leaders in grades 4 through 12. It says literacy is core instruction, known as Tier 1, and the responsibility of every teacher. It also says schools do best when every subject shares a common set of routines and a common language for talking about reading and writing.

At Fort Valley Middle School, reading and writing are not only focused on in English class. They are integrated into all subjects.

Sixth grade English teacher Amber Dunbar plays a key role in setting students up for success from day one.
