Athens Academy Senior Explores the Art of Teaching Mathematics Through Capstone Project
Tuesday, October 27th, 2026
Athens Academy senior Andrew Caldwell has turned his passion for mathematics and teaching into an ambitious Capstone project titled “Becoming Mr. Caldwell: Best Practices and Strategies in Secondary Math Education.” Combining classroom experience, educational research, and mentorship, Andrew has explored what makes an effective math teacher while developing his own teaching skills and philosophy.
Andrew's interest in teaching began in elementary school, and since seventh grade, he has accumulated approximately 36 hours of classroom instruction in subjects ranging from Pre-Algebra to Honors Algebra II and Precalculus. Working alongside Athens Academy faculty, he has developed lesson plans, led classroom activities, tutored students, and collected feedback to improve his teaching. He also interviewed nine educators, including a University of Georgia mathematics education professor, to learn more about effective teaching strategies, classroom management, and student engagement.
For the research component of his project, Andrew examined trends in American mathematics education, reviewing more than 75 sources and exploring the impact of standardized testing, declining math scores, and challenges facing today's teachers. With guidance from his Capstone mentor, Athens Academy math teacher Eric Bright, Andrew applied his findings to the classroom, focusing on strategies that encourage student participation, build confidence, and strengthen understanding.
Andrew concluded his project in September by teaching seven sections across four mathematics courses in just five days. He also developed instructional resources and activities to share with Athens Academy teachers. The experience has strengthened his desire to pursue a career in education while giving him a deeper appreciation for the dedication and creativity required to be an effective teacher.
Now in its fourth cohort, Athens Academy’s Capstone Program provides Upper School students with the opportunity to explore a topic of personal interest through independent research, hands-on experience, and meaningful engagement beyond the classroom. Working with faculty mentors and community experts, students develop and complete projects that encourage critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and personal growth. The program empowers students to pursue their passions while developing skills that will serve them in college and beyond.
Athens Academy is an independent, co-educational school for students in K3 through 12th grade, located on a beautiful 152-acre campus in Northeast Georgia. Now in its 60th year, Athens Academy pursues its mission of “excellence with honor” through academics, athletics, fine arts, and service and leadership. Ranked the #1 private school in Athens, #7 private school in the state of Georgia (out of 400+ schools), and #1 private school in North Georgia (Niche.com).
