Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center offers a minimally invasive cardiac bypass surgery known as robot-assisted MIDCAB (minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass), providing some patients with an alternative to traditional open-heart surgery. 

Piedmont cardiothoracic surgeon Trent Magruder, M.D., launched robot-assisted MIDCAB procedures at Piedmont Athens in 2023, expanding access to advanced surgical options for patients in northeast Georgia. 

“Minimally invasive techniques allow us to treat heart disease while reducing the physical toll of surgery,” said Dr. Magruder. “Our goal is to offer patients options that support both excellent outcomes and a faster return to their daily lives.” 

Unlike traditional open-heart surgery, robot-assisted MIDCAB is performed through small incisions rather than a large incision through the center of the chest called a sternotomy. As a result, most patients experience a shorter recovery time and return to normal activities sooner, making the procedure an attractive option for those seeking a quicker path back to work, family life, and daily routines. 

“Nearly half a million bypass surgeries are performed each year, and more of them are being done robotically. However, it is a highly specialized procedure, and not all hospitals offer it,” Dr. Magruder said. “I’m proud to offer it at Piedmont Athens, giving patients in northeast Georgia access to high-level heart care closer to home.” 

Piedmont Athens continues to invest in advanced surgical techniques and technologies, such as surgical robotics, that improve patient outcomes and enhance the care experience. In September 2025, the hospital kicked off a $56 million renovation of its operating rooms to increase the number of procedure rooms and install state-of-the-art equipment. The project is expected to be completed in 2028.
