Wednesday, April 1st, 2026

Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) Manager Bob Cowell has named Pamela Long as Elections Department Director, effective immediately. Long has served as Interim Director since March 2025 after the resignation of former director Charlotte Sosebee.

“Pamela’s lengthy experience with the Elections Department and her deep commitment to the vital work of the elections process from voter registration to elections certification make her the best choice for this position,” says Cowell. “She has led the department during this critical interim period and demonstrated her commitment to ensuring Athens-Clarke County’s elections this year and in the future meet the highest standards.”

Long joined the ACCGov Elections Department in 2014. She had previously served as an Elections Clerk for four years and Elections Assistant for seven years before her appointment as Interim Director.

Long has federal certification as a Certified Elections/Registration Administrator from the National Association of Election Officials and serves as an Executive Board Member of the Georgia Association of Voter Registration and Election Officials.

“I am honored to serve as the Elections Director for Athens-Clarke County and grateful for the trust placed in me,” says Long. “Our community depends on elections that are secure, transparent, and accessible, and I am committed to upholding those standards in every aspect of our work.”

“Athens-Clarke County has a strong tradition of civic engagement, and I look forward to working with our staff, local leaders, and residents to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to participate with confidence,” she says. “Together, we will continue to strengthen the integrity of our elections and maintain the public’s trust in the democratic process.”

Prior to her work in elections, Long worked in the medical field. She is a Certified Medical Assistant from Athens Technical College and holds a bachelor’s degree from Liberty University.

The Election Department manages voter registration and conducts all elections held in Athens-Clarke County, including the city of Winterville. The department uses the Georgia Elections Code, Georgia State Election Board rules, and U.S. Justice Department regulations as guidelines.
