Dr. Melissa Butler Sworn in as Superintendent of Oconee County Schools

Dr. Melissa Butler was sworn in as the new Superintendent of Oconee County Schools during the Board of Education’s October work session on Monday at the Instructional Support Center.
Dr. Butler took the oath of office, administered by Judge Mike Hunsinger, at the outset of Monday’s meeting. Dr. Butler will begin her duties as Superintendent on Oct. 14.
“This is a community that cares deeply about its children and works together to help them succeed,” Dr. Butler said. “My commitment is to honor that legacy of excellence while continuing to embrace opportunities for growth in the future. Every decision we make will be centered on what’s best for our students because they are the heart of our work and the future of Oconee County. I am committed to ensuring that every student has access to an exceptional education, supported by a caring and safe environment and high expectations.”
Dr. Debra Harden has served as Interim Superintendent since July following Dr. Jason Branch’s retirement. Dr. Harden will continue with the district as the Interim Associate Superintendent to assist with the transition.
After Dr. Harden gave her final Superintendent’s Report, the Board heard additional presentations from Teaching and Learning, Student Services, Special Education, Technology, Operations, Operations-Facilities, Human Resources, and Communications.
Chief Operations Officer Ryan White presented action items for a school bus request for quotes, vehicle surplus, transportation radio system, transportation camera system, and North Oconee High bleachers repair.
Director of Facilities Fred Ricketson had action items concerning the Fiscal Year 2027 Capital Outlay Project Application and the North Oconee High stormwater pipe.
Chief Technology Officer Tony McCullers brought action items for Board Policy JCDAF: Use of Electronic Devices by Students and an interactive panels pilot.
Director of Student Services Kevin Yancey presented action items for four out-of-state field trips for the North Oconee High baseball, cross country and soccer squads.
All action items will be voted on by the Board of Education at the Oct. 20 regular session.
The Board of Education approved the personnel report as presented.
