Thrive at Georgia Program Helps Scholars Transition to College
Friday, August 8th, 2025
Fourteen incoming students kick-started their college career this summer through Thrive at Georgia: Bulldog Bridge, a weeklong residential program designed to help students feel prepared, connected and excited about their first year at the University of Georgia.
The program, held on UGA’s campus from July 25 to Aug. 1, introduced the students to college life, blending campus exploration, community building and classroom learning.
Organized through a partnership between the Office of Instruction and the Division of Student Affairs’ department of university transitions, Thrive at Georgia combined portions of Dawg Camp with learning activities organized by the Office for Student Success and Achievement.
“Thrive at Georgia: Bulldog Bridge exemplifies our commitment to student success and belonging,” said Cara Winston Simmons, director of OSSA. “Watching these scholars grow in confidence, build meaningful connections and discover the resources available to them has been incredibly rewarding. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we’re able to offer experiences that not only prepare students academically but also affirm that they are valued members of the UGA community.”
The program, now in its 26th year, was redesigned to focus on supporting students whose scholarships are made possible through private donations to help make college more attainable. This year’s cohort included Georgia Commitment Scholars, Coca-Cola First-Generation Scholars and College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Rural Scholars.
Throughout the week, students learned about UGA resources during visits to the Career Center, Ramsey Student Center and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. They completed service projects at a local food bank and cemetery. In the classroom, sessions focused on goal setting, financial literacy, time management and navigating higher education.
Participants finished the program with a deeper understanding of UGA’s campus and resources and with a supportive new community of fellow students.
“The Thrive program has truly been a great experience,” said Emma Metheney, incoming UGA freshman. “I made so many new connections that I know will last throughout my college career. It has truly made me feel more confident in my transition into college.”
Thrive at Georgia: Bulldog Bridge reflects UGA’s commitment to student success, ensuring that scholars arrive on campus prepared and excited to begin their college journey.
