Oconee County Board of Education Moves Forward with Superintendent Search
Wednesday, July 9th, 2025
The Oconee County Board of Education continues to work on selecting a new Superintendent of Schools. Planning for the search began in May 2025. The Board asked Georgia Leadership Associates to serve as consultants for the search. The position was advertised with an application deadline of June 16, 2025.
The Board conducted an online survey that was completed by over 1,415 community members and school district staff. The Board values community input in this process. The results from this online survey were closely reviewed by Board members. The survey results have been released to the media and published on the Oconee County School System website.
On Monday, July 7, 2025, the Board reviewed applicants and began planning the interview process. Interviews will begin this month. After the first round of interviews, the Board will select the top candidates for the second round of interviews in August.
The Board of Education wants to stress the legal requirements for superintendent selection under O.C.G.A. 50-18-72. Once the Board selects a finalist, it will announce who has been selected at least 14 calendar days prior to the meeting at which final action or vote is to be taken on the position. Under the law, the Board can name up to three finalists, but majority of Boards identify a sole finalist. All documents for the position, pertaining to the finalist, shall be subject to inspection and copying. These application documents of the finalist will be released to the media and public.
This release gives the community time to review the qualifications of the finalist before this person is voted on by the Board. The Board shall not be required to release such records of other applicants or persons under consideration. This law brings transparency to the entire process and prevents any Board from selecting a superintendent before the community and media has information about the candidate.
