Governor Kemp recently signed HB 423 into law, which amends the roles and responsibilities of the Georgia Emergency Communications Authority (GECA). One amendment included authorizing the purchase and implementation of Next Generation 911 (NG911). NG911 is a broadband-enabled system that will replace the current outdated 911 infrastructure. Benefits of NG911 include:

    • Increased caller location accuracy reported to the 911 center,

    • Increased compatibility with emerging communication trends,

    • Improved emergency response for the public and first responders,

    • More consistent 911 service across the state, and

    • Increased redundancy and resiliency of the 911 system.

GECA is developing a comprehensive strategy to address the technology and funding requirements for statewide implementation. A key component of this initiative is gaining a clear understanding of the current 911 landscape and identifying the needs of Georgia’s 911 centers.

To support this effort, GECA has developed a survey to gather input from 911 operators and to ensure that needs of Georgia's public safety departments are represented. Feedback from the survey will play a vital role in shaping legislative recommendations and funding requests, especially in preparation for the upcoming 911 fee study this summer and the 2026 legislative session.

GECA's request of city leadership is to follow up with your 911 leadership team to ensure they received the survey request and encourage them to complete the survey by Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
