Immersive industry visits connect UGA students with major corporations

The University of Georgia Career Center provides students with invaluable opportunities to explore diverse career paths. On March 21, the Career Center organized a “Career Caravan” to two prominent Atlanta-based companies: Delta Air Lines and IHG Hotels & Resorts. This immersive experience aimed to give UGA students firsthand learning from the hospitality industry.

At Delta Air Lines, participants were provided with an in-flight service training tour that offered a glimpse into the dynamic world of airline operations. Guided by two active flight attendants, students witnessed the rigorous training involved. They also engaged in realistic in-flight simulations including emergency landing scenarios on a hydraulic simulator, experiencing turbulence, evacuating on slides and practicing water landings and raft deployment.

The day featured a glimpse into the latest Delta plane model, showcasing the Delta One seats and a hands-on session on in-flight concession and cart service. UGA alumni working as flight attendants shared their personal journeys and offered insights into their career paths, expectations and advancement opportunities.

“The Delta and IHG Caravan trip was an incredible and eye-opening experience, bridging my hospitality connections and providing firsthand insight into the operations and cultures of these two industry leaders,” said Angela Nguyen, hospitality and food industry management student. “This educational and inspiring journey offered valuable perspectives I will carry forward in my career.”

At IHG Hotels & Resorts, students engaged in a presentation focused on talent and culture, as well as the company’s hiring processes. A networking lunch facilitated connections with IHG representatives, many of whom were UGA alumni, and provided high-level industry insights. These alumni addressed student questions, offering firsthand perspectives on career paths and industry expectations.

The visit included an overview of IHG’s diverse brand portfolio, business structure and corporate culture, followed by a tour of their corporate workspace. Students also learned about the revitalization of the Crowne Plaza, which now holds the No. 1 spot on TripAdvisor in the Dunwoody market, showcasing IHG’s commitment to excellence and innovation within the hospitality sector.

“Establishing and maintaining partnerships is mutually beneficial, allowing us to serve students while giving companies a firsthand look at UGA’s talent pool,” said Brandon Solie, UGA career consultant. “We’re grateful to have partners like IHG and Delta that help us to continue to elevate the student experience at UGA.”

The Career Caravan exemplifies the UGA Career Center’s commitment to equipping students with the tools and experiences necessary for successful career journeys. Other recent Career Caravan visits have included the Atlanta Braves, Google-Midtown, Boston Scientific and Insight Global.

“These Career Caravan experiences are crucial for our students to gain exposure to industry leaders and bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice,” said Scott Williams, executive director of the UGA Career Center. “By engaging directly with companies like Delta and IHG, our students gain invaluable insights into company culture, hiring practices and potential career pathways.”
