SCAD Honors Georgia Governors Legacy with Tree Portraits & Georgia Arbor Day project
Tuesday, March 11th, 2025
Georgia’s rich forestland, Governor Kemp, and five former governors have been jointly honored in a series of original paintings. In recognition of Georgia Arbor Day, vibrant artwork created by Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) students depicts the native tree species selected by each governor. Each of those live species are planted in the Georgia Forestry Commission’s “Governors’ Grove.”
“It’s an honor to join Georgia’s governors in celebrating both the incredible natural beauty of our forests and the creativity and talent of our students,” said Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. “Georgia is blessed with bountiful forest resources, which are uniquely preserved and presented through this project. Thank you to all our young artists who made this possible.”
“Georgia’s Arbor Day is the perfect time to share these wonderful interpretations of our state’s native trees,” said Georgia Forestry Commission Director Johnny Sabo. “Each tree planted in the grove, like the Governor they represent, is part of a powerful group that brings great benefits to all Georgians. We’re grateful to each SCAD artist for reflecting those benefits so beautifully.”
The Governors’ chosen tree species are:
- Brian Kemp - Governor (2019-Incumbent) - Cherrybark Oak
- Nathan Deal – Governor (2011-2019) - Red Maple
- Sonny Perdue - Governor (2003-2011) - Slash Pine
- Roy Barnes – Governor (1999-2003) - Live Oak
- Joe Frank Harris – Governor (1983-1991) - Red Maple
- Jimmy Carter - Governor (1971-1975) - American Sycamore
The Governor’s Grove is located at Georgia Forestry Commission Headquarters in Macon, Ga. It was established in 2015 and trees planted there were chosen by successive Georgia Governors.
"We are grateful to the Georgia Forestry Commission for providing this opportunity to the university's talented Fine Arts students,” said Kent Knowles, Associate Chair, Fine Arts at SCAD. “Each painting celebrates the spirit of our shared endeavors and is a visual testament to the vibrancy, artistry, and growth of our great state."
