Athens Academy's STAR Student

Senior Leo Gabara has been recognized as the STAR Student for Athens Academy for the
2024-25 school year. He has selected AP Chemistry teacher Julie Boyd as his STAR Teacher.
A student leader of the Model United Nations Club and of the Math Club, Leo has served on
Honor Council for four years and on Judiciary Board for two. Leo is a semifinalist for the National
Merit Scholarship and was recently named a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars
Program; he is a member of the National Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the
French Honor Society. An avid language learner, he is currently studying French and Italian. Leo is
first trumpet in the school band and has played the piano for twelve years. In college, he intends to
major in chemistry and political science in order to pursue an international career in scientific
research or policy.
Leo’s STAR teacher, Julie Boyd, has taught him in both Honors Chemistry and AP
Chemistry. Ms. Boyd has been a member of the Upper School Science Department since 2005. She
previously taught chemistry at Stratford Academy in Macon for fifteen years. Ms. Boyd has a
bachelor's degree from Mercer University.
