Oconee County Schools Opens Public School Choice Window

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, December 4th, 2024

Oconee County Schools has opened its Public School Choice window. As of Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, at 4:00 p.m., through Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, at 4:00 p.m., individuals may submit a request to have their child transferred to another public school within the school system for the 2025-26 school year.

This year, all 12 schools are available for school choice. To make this process easier for our families and to support the planning purposes for school personnel, school choice will become a decision for K-5 and 6-12. So families would decide for their elementary school and then only one decision for a secondary pathway once in 6th grade; whereas in the past, families had to choose K-5, then 6-8, and again for 9-12.

Please keep in mind that if you choose to transfer your child to another school within the system, you must assume all costs and responsibilities related to transportation to and from school for as long as your child remains at that school.

All high school students electing to transfer under Public School Choice shall be subject to GHSA eligibility requirements.

To process your request, you need to complete and submit the “Application for Student Transfer” form and return it to the Office of Student Services at 71 North Main Street, Watkinsville GA 30677. You can download this form by clicking here.

Requests for Public School Choice transfers will not be accepted after 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025. Letters of approval will be mailed on or before Friday, Jan. 24, 2025. The OCS transfer process occurs annually at a specified time to be announced each year.

If you have any questions about school choice, please contact the Office of Student Services at 706.769.5130, ext. 1213. Thank you for your continued support of Oconee County Schools.
