Just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Piedmont Athens Regional finished a $210,000 renovation of its Breast Health Center. The project was fully funded by donations through the Piedmont Athens Regional Foundation and includes new flooring, updated lighting, fresh paint, new waiting room and dressing room furniture and artwork, updates to the registration and main waiting areas as well as new signage throughout the center.

“Getting a yearly mammogram is important in the fight against breast cancer,” explained Shelley McCarley, the manager of breast health services at Piedmont Athens Regional. “We want our patients to be comfortable and relaxed when they come to the Breast Health Center to get their screenings, so it was important to create a more serene, spa-like atmosphere.”

Renovations began in March 2024 and an open house was held in September to show off the updates. Patients, community members, and Piedmont Athens staff had the opportunity to tour the center and learn more about the services provided as well as see the completed renovations.

The Breast Health Center at Piedmont Athens Regional is located in the Medical Services Building on the hospital’s main campus. According to McCarley, in the last 12 months, the center has completed more than 17,900 screening mammograms and an additional 9,400 diagnostic procedures. The center offers late appointments to accommodate patient’s busy schedules, and appointments are usually available within five to six business days.

Patients can schedule a screening mammogram online at piedmontmammo.org, or call 706-475-1000 to make an appointment at the Breast Health Center at Piedmont Athens Regional.
