Oconee County Schools ranked No. 1 in the state in three areas and in the top four in seven others in the Georgia Milestones assessments for 2023-24 announced on Friday.

The Georgia Department of Education on Friday released 12 assessments in English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies. The Math data will be made available later this fall.

“We are very pleased with our students' performances on the Georgia Milestones assessments,” Superintendent Jason Branch said. “These scores are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our young people, teachers, and staff. This achievement underscores the district’s commitment to academic excellence.”

Oconee County held Georgia’s top rating in end-of-grade testing for fourth-grade English Language Arts and eighth-grade Social Studies and end-of-course testing for high school students in United States History.

Oconee County stood No. 2 overall (and No. 1 for county districts) in end-of-grade testing for third-, sixth-, and seventh-grade English Language Arts, and No. 3 for fifth-grade Science. The end-of-grade testing for fifth- and eighth-grade English Language Arts and the end-of-course testing for American Literature placed No. 4.

Students take Georgia Milestones end-of-grade tests in grades 3-8, and end-of-course tests in identified high school courses. The Georgia Milestones Assessment System meets the federal requirement that states test students in Math and ELA in grades 3-8 and once in high school, and in Science once per grade band (3-5, 6-9, 10-12).

The top-10 state results below are based on Oconee County’s ranking among all Georgia systems. Some systems did not have enough test-takers to be representative of the total population based on prior achievement.
