On Friday March 15th Macon Attorney Christopher N. Smith was elevated to Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog 1st class at a ceremony held at the Royal Danish Embassy in Washington. He was pinned with the Knight's medal by HRH Prince Joachim of Denmark who serves as Chancellor of the Orders.   The Royal Order of Chivalry was established in 1671 by King Christian V.  In 1808 the Order was expanded to include  multiple grades of the award.  Mr. Smith was originally Knighted into the Order in 2016  as a Knight.  He now has been promoted to the rank of Knight 1st Class.  The elevation order was made by HM Queen Margrethe ll during the last month of her reign and became effective on January 1st.  Her eldest son became King Fredeirik X on January 14th.

The Order bears the name Dannebrog as that is the name of the national flag of Denmark.  Legend has it that the flag fell from the sky in the Battle of Lyndanise on June 15th 1219.   It has been the national flag of Denmark since that time.  The Georgia Bulldog red flag with it's white cross is the oldest national flag still in use in the world. 

Ambassador Jesper Sorensen, the Danish Ambassador presided over the ceremony where 4 Danish Honorary Consuls were elevated to Knight 1st class and one received his knighthood.  A luncheon prepared by the chef of the Royal Danish Embassy followed the presentation.  Mr. Smith has maintained his own law firm in Macon since 1993.  His practice is civil in nature with an emphasis on business and personal injury law.  He has also served as the Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Denmark in the state of Georgia since 2006.
