Matt Can Recognized as STAR Student for Athens Academy

Senior Matt Can has been recognized as the STAR Student for Athens Academy for the 2023-24 school year. He has selected Latin teacher Mike Butler as his STAR Teacher.

In addition to his STAR recognition, Matt is a National Merit Semi-finalist and a member of the National Honor Society and the Latin Honor Society. In addition to his in-depth studies in the subject of mathematics, with coursework in Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, AP Calculus BC, Differential Equations and more, Matt is an accomplished musician on the guitar and viola. He is the co-president of the Math Club, volunteers as an online instructor for Engaging Math Circles, and is a member of the inaugural cohort for the Athens Academy Capstone Program. Matt is also the founder and president of both the Board Game Club and the Chess Club at Athens Academy.

Matt’s STAR teacher, Mike Butler, has taught him Latin for the past three years. Mr. Butler has been a member of the World Languages Department at Athens Academy since 2020. He previously taught at Oak Hill Classical School in Dacula, Georgia, and served as a professor of philosophy at Christ College in Lynchburg, Virginia. Mr. Butler has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and history from California State University and a master’s degree in philosophy from Claremont Graduate University.
