Board of Education Elects New Officers
Tuesday, January 16th, 2024
At its Thursday, Jan. 11 meeting, the Clarke County Board of Education held its biennial officer elections. Dr. Mumbi Anderson (District 6) was elected board President, while Mr. Mark Evans (District 9) was elected Vice President. Elections for President and Vice President are generally held during the first board meeting of even-numbered years, and vacancies for those positions are filled by election as they arise.
Dr. Anderson, who had served as Vice President since 2022, succeeds District 7 board member Dr. LaKeisha Gantt who had served as President since May 2019. Elected to the board in 2020, Dr. Anderson moved to Athens in 1991 and attended Clarke County schools. She is a mother of three children, including a 2023 graduate of Clarke Central High School. She is currently a clinical assistant professor in the College of Public Health at the University of Georgia, where she teaches, provides oversight in graduate education, and works on the college’s accreditation and evaluation activities. She also serves on several university and community boards and committees. Dr. Anderson’s current board term expires in December 2024.
Mr. Evans was first elected to the board in 2022, and his current term expires in December 2026. He is an assistant professor of education and the director of the Center of Teaching and Learning at Piedmont University and has two children in Clarke County schools.
