Friday, December 8th, 2023
McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. announced the completion of the new Poultry Science Building at the University of Georgia, part of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The facility will provide students and faculty access to modern labs, collaborative meeting spaces, and classrooms equipped with the latest technology. Additional design partners include Newcomb & Boyd, Koons Environmental, and FLAD Architects.
The 70,000-square-foot new building encompasses a total of six floors, including a mechanical penthouse, classrooms, teaching labs, teaching lab support rooms, faculty and staff offices, administrative offices, postdoctoral and graduate student offices, collaboration rooms, small and large conference rooms. The new facility will also house biosafety labs, support rooms, walk-in cold storage rooms, centralized core labs, and avian vivarium. The architectural blueprint for the building prioritized boosting student collaboration, enriching the student experience and maximizing the poultry science department’s diverse learning and opportunities within the poultry science department.
“We are proud to deliver this project to the students and faculty at the University of Georgia, as the new Poultry Science Building stands as a testament to the university’s dedication to advancing agriculture in Georgia, a state at the forefront of poultry production in the nation,” said Bobby Campell, business unit leader and executive vice president at McCarthy’s Atlanta location. “Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, including material delays and increased costs during an unprecedented time, our teams collaborated seamlessly. We were successful in completing the project within the stipulated budget and timeline, allowing for student occupancy in the upcoming spring semester of 2024.”
During construction, a green energy model was applied to the design and was utilized as a basis of design and schematic design for building system decisions. The Poultry Science Building holds certification from the Georgia Peach Program, a recognition initiative for state-owned or managed buildings that excel in energy efficiency, promote the use of Georgia-produced materials and furnishings, enhance environmental quality, conserve energy, protect the state’s natural resources and reduce the burden on the state’s water supply.
“From the office to the jobsite, we did our best to respect the environment and tap in our extensive Georgia Peach building expertise to exceed sustainability,” said Lizzy Burge, project director at McCarthy’s Atlanta location. “We are excited to be a part of this exceptional building and the future it will provide for its students.”
McCarthy has completed several Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission (GSFIC) projects and Board of Regents (BOR) projects over the years, including West Georgia Technical College - Carroll Campus, Georgia State University’s College of Law and Petit Science Center Building, and Georgia Institute of Technology’s Krone Engineered Biosystems Building. The delivery of the Poultry Science Building signifies the beginning of McCarthy’s partnership with the University of Georgia. The firm was recently awarded another project at the university, the West Campus Parking Deck II for faculty and students to use
