Books for Keeps and Creature Comforts Partner up to Increase Athens Literacy Rates

Books for Keeps, a nonprofit to increase literacy rates among Athens elementary students, created a literacy mentor program in 2009. The initiative caught the attention of popular Athens hotspot, Creature Comforts, so the two organizations formed a partnership a couple of years ago to target low literacy rates at a local elementary school.

In 2021, the brewery decided to focus on one issue: early literacy rates among third grade students. The program, called Get Comfortable, aims to increase the percentage of Clarke County third grade students reading at grade level from 20% to 60% by 2027.
