Athens Sees Slight Uptick in June Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Athens recorded an unemployment rate of 3.6 percent in May, up three-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.6 percent.

“The bedrock of a thriving economy lies in maintaining low unemployment, but equally essential is striking the right balance between job growth and a capable workforce that can meet the evolving needs of Georgia’s industries,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “This well-balanced approach ensures businesses of all sizes have the talent they need to grow and succeed."

The labor force decreased in Athens by 270 and ended the month with 99,940. That number went up by 3,306 when compared to June of 2022. 

Athens finished the month with 96,348 employed residents. That number decreased by 520 over the month and rose by 3,233 when compared to the same time a year ago. 

Athens ended June with 100,100 jobs. That number decreased by 200 from May to June and increased by 5,300 when compared to this time last year.

In June, initial unemployment claims were down by 77 (-27%) in Athens. When you compare June 2023 claims to June 2022, claims were down by 49 (-19%).
