Two Seniors Recognized as STAR Students for Athens Academy

Seniors Seager Hunt and Ricardo Ureña have been recognized as STAR students for Athens Academy for the 2022-23 school year. They have selected Kate Towery and Ed Miller as their STAR Teachers, respectively.

In addition to his STAR recognition, Seager is a National Merit Semi-finalist and a member of the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society. This spring he won two Silver Key Awards for his artwork from the prestigious Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Program. In addition, Seager is a candidate for the U.S. Department of Education’s Presidential Scholarship, and he serves as the president of the Athens Academy Honor Council and the Judiciary Board. Seager is the son of Ashley and Weyman Hunt of Madison. He has not finalized his college plans at this point.

Ricardo is a National Merit Commended Student and a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. He is the GISA state champion in Extemporaneous Domestic Speaking, and he has won a spot on the GMEA District Honor Band three times. Ricardo is a member of the Bridges Club, the Interact Club, and 17, Athens Academy’s student ambassador program, and he also plays varsity soccer. He is the son of Janel and Ricardo Ureña of Madison, and he will be attending Duke University in the fall, where he plans to study computer science and economics.

Seager’s STAR teacher, Kate Towery, taught him AP English Language and Composition during his junior year. Ms. Towery has been an English teacher in Athens Academy’s Upper School since 2015, in addition to serving as the faculty advisor for the yearbook and ACAD Talks. She received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from North Georgia College and State University and a master’s degree in teaching English education from The University of Georgia.

Ricardo’s STAR teacher, Ed Miller, taught him AP Computer Science Principles during his sophomore year and Precalculus Honors during his junior year. Mr. Miller has been an Upper School math teacher at Athens Academy since 2017 and assumed the position of chair of the mathematics department last fall. He has a bachelor’s degree from Harvey Mudd College and a master’s degree from Agnes Scott College.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia's outstanding high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. During the past 58 years, the STAR Program has honored thousands of high school seniors who have in turn chosen their STAR Teachers to share in this recognition.
