Athens Academy Students Participate in Model UN
Friday, February 10th, 2023
Athens Academy’s Model UN team spent February 3-5, 2023, participating in the annual high
school Model UN conference hosted by the UGA collegiate Model UN team. Over 500 students from
schools across the Southeast were in attendance. Athens Academy’s team included sixteen Upper
School students representing the countries of South Africa and Poland, along with positions in the
conference’s “crisis committees.”
Special congratulations go to sophomore Joshua Xie, who was recognized with an honorable
mention award for his work in the crisis committee “The Death of Stalin.”
The sixteen team members included seniors Will Hines, Taylor Leach, Thomas Meyer, Jackson
Scruggs, Kishan Shah, Karan Tongia, and Safi Uddin; juniors Anvesha Das, Margalit Mauricio, and Om
Patel; and sophomores Luke De La Fuente, Will Dugas, Leo Gabara, Kartik Menke, Connor Schoenfeld,
and Joshua Xie.
According to faculty advisor Allison Turney, “This was a busy weekend for Athens Academy
students, with a winter dance, a robotics competition, a soccer game, and the state swim meet requiring
students to sometimes miss part of the conference.” Dr. Turney continued, “Nonetheless, I am
appreciative that they came to Model UN as much as they could and were active participants when
there!”
