Athens Academy Physics Teachers Wins Grant
Wednesday, February 8th, 2023
Athens Academy is pleased to announce that Upper School physics teacher David Nelson has been awarded a EmPOWERment Grant from Walton EMC in the amount of $6,093. Nelson plans to use the funds to purchase a set of SPARK LXi2 Dataloggers as well as timers and photogates in order to conduct labs demonstrating Newton’s Second Law and Conservation of Energy, among other things.
According to Nelson’s application for the grant, “Physics is such an interesting subject, but it is sometimes difficult for students to mentally reconcile in their minds the topics we are discussing. Studying graphs and what they tell us is a huge part of physics, especially AP Physics. A student who is able to see the graphs produced in real time has a much better chance of retaining the information.”
On Thursday, February 2, representatives from Walton EMC came to the Athens Academy campus to meet with Nelson. They congratulated him and presented him with a check for the total amount of his grant application. According to their website, Walton EMC’s School EmPOWERment Grant program “offers educational grants to schools and classroom teachers for a myriad of uses that further instructional programs.”
