Athens Sees Drop in September Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Athens recorded an unemployment rate of 2.3 percent in September, down six-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 2.8 percent.
"We continue to see a steady rise in job creation and demand by employers to fill open positions,” said Commissioner Mark Butler. “This strong growth has led to Georgia having the fewest unemployed residents in over 20 years."
The labor force increased in Athens by 766 and ended the month with 103,620. That number went up by 2,314 when compared to September of 2021.
Athens finished the month with 101,216 employed residents. That number increased by 1,364 over the month and rose by 2,702 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Athens ended September with 103,300 jobs, an all-time high. That number increased by 500 from August to September and increased by 5,100 when compared to this time last year.
The number of unemployment claims went down 4 percent in Athens in September. When compared to last September, claims were down by about 1 percent.
