District 2 Commissioner Parker Resigns Effective Aug. 31, Special Election to Fill Seat on Nov. 8th

Staff Report

Tuesday, August 30th, 2022

Athens-Clarke County District 2 Commissioner Mariah Parker has resigned from their seat, effective August 31, 2022.

As per the Athens-Clarke County Charter and state law O.C.G.A. § 21-2-540, a Special Election is planned for November 8, 2022 for Commission District 2 voters to elect a new commission representative. This election will take place at the same time as the November 8, 2022 General Election.

Because the position becomes vacant less than 90 days before Election Day, voters in Commission District 2 will vote on two separate ballots – one for the Special Election and one for the General Election – whether using absentee or in-person voting. The newly-elected Commissioner will serve for the remainder of the current term that ends in 2024.

Official action will be taken by the Mayor and Commission and Board of Elections at upcoming meetings to call a Special Election and set the candidate qualifying period for those interested in the District 2 Commission seat.

Due to redistricting in 2022, residents who are eligible to vote in the District 2 Commissioner Special Election are those who reside in the areas covered by the new voting district maps that go into effect as of January 1, 2023. Voters can find their voting district through an online search tool at www.accgov.com/elections or through the Georgia My Voter Page portal at mvp.sos.ga.gov.
