Staff Report

Monday, August 1st, 2022

The players, coaches, and team support staff of the Athens Academy football program volunteered throughout the Athens-Oconee community on Tuesday, July 26. This event marked the eighth year the team supported local organizations in need of a helping hand.

Four groups spent time volunteering with City of Refuge, Downtown Academy, ESP, and the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. “This was our best service day ever,” according to Head Coach Josh Alexander. “It allows our students to serve in a different way, and they realized how rewarding it is to give back to your community. We were fortunate to be able to help in any way we could.” One group spent time helping at Downtown Academy, unpacking summer storage and setting up for the school year—a project they have helped with for many years. New this year, a group volunteered at City of Refuge, preparing boxes of food and delivering them to people in the community. Athens Academy’s Team 44 opens their season with a home scrimmage against The Westminster Schools on Friday, August 12, followed by their first official game at Dade County High School on Friday, August 19.
