Athens Sees an All-Time Low Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Athens tied an all-time low unemployment rate of 2.2 percent. A year ago, the rate was 4.5 percent.

"We are continuing to see all-time low unemployment rates across the state while also seeing job growth in all of our statistical areas,” said Commissioner Mark Butler. “The focus now is getting Georgians back into the workforce to fill these critical positions, particularly as we gear up for a strong holiday employment season.”

The labor force increased in Athens by 343 and ended the month with 98,800. That number is up 125 when compared to October of 2020.

Athens finished the month with 96,665 employed residents.  That number increased by 325 over the month and is up by 2,428 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Athens ended October with 95,300 jobs. That number increased by 800 from September to October and increased by 1,900 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims remained at 51 percent in Athens in October. When compared to last October, claims were down by about 92 percent.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 3,463 active job postings in Athens for October.
