U.S. Senator David Perdue (R-GA), a member of the Senate Budget and Armed Services Committees, comments on the bipartisan budget agreement reached by the Trump Administration and congressional leaders, which will allow Congress to fund the federal government and prevent a continuing resolution (CR) for the military:

“Without this bipartisan budget deal, Congress would be staring down the barrel of sequestration, a one-year CR, or another government shutdown. Any of those outcomes would be draconian for our military and would reverse the longest economic expansion in U.S. history. I give President Trump and Secretary Mnuchin high marks for negotiating in good faith and reaching a very responsible compromise with congressional leadership. Of course this budget deal is not perfect, but it will support our women and men in uniform, contains zero liberal policy riders, and keeps the ball moving to fully fund the government on time. That’s a win in my book.

“I’m a debt hawk as much as anybody. The truth is, opponents of this budget deal are unknowingly voting to add to long-term costs. In fact, under this budget, discretionary spending continues to fall as a percentage of GDP over the next two years. The alternatives would add billions of dollars to defense expenses over the next decade. Until we fix this broken funding process and save Social Security and Medicare, we’re not going to make any real headway on the debt.”

Background On Senator Perdue’s Work To Responsibly Fund The Federal Government:

On July 3, Senator Perdue led a group of 16 senators encouraging Trump Administration officials to reach consensus with congressional leaders on a budget deal to fully fund the government on time. The senators warned that another continuing resolution (CR) would devastate the military, delay the implementation of President Trump’s National Defense Strategy (NDS), and increase costs.

On July 24, Senator Perdue spoke on the Senate floor to explain why the bipartisan budget agreement is a reasonable compromise that will allow Congress to fund the federal government on time and prevent another CR.

On August 1, Senator Perdue spoke on the Senate floor to encourage his colleagues to vote in favor of the budget agreement.

As a member of the Senate Budget and Armed Services Committees, Senator Perdue has continuously called out the flaws in Congress’s funding processand warned of the damage CRs inflict on the military.
