Lyndon House Arts Center and Lounge Gallery Present Photographs by Nathaniel Burkins
Wednesday, August 28th, 2019
The Lyndon House Arts Center announces the new Lounge Gallery exhibition, Photographs by Nathaniel Burkins. The opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Thursday, September 5 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Lyndon House Arts Center. The exhibit remains on view through November 30, 2019.
Nathaniel Burkins photographed New York and Chicago in the '90s before relocating to Athens to raise a family. Burkins took a break from exhibiting but not from taking pictures. He is out making images daily, focusing on people, geometry and approaching his subjects with a humorous perspective. We are lucky to get to see him reinvigorating his practice; this is the first time Burkins has exhibited his work locally. “I’ve always loved to walk. Once, when I was about seventeen I was walking in Chicago, my hometown, and I saw a pigeon riding on the back of a truck. Back then, before the invention of cell phones, people used to say, "I wish I had my camera!" whenever they saw something incredible, wondrous, or funny. In the more than 40 years since that moment, I have always carried my camera with me, no matter what, whether in Chicago, New York City, Europe, or Athens, where I live now. My photographs are the product of thousands of miles of walking, observing the beauty of the human comedy against the backdrop of urban architecture, sprawl, and commerce.”
The Lounge Gallery at the Lyndon House Arts Center, features quarterly solo exhibitions by artists exploring the first steps towards a professional career as an image maker. Artists in the beginning stages or re- invigorating their careers exhibit wall-bound works in mediums alternating from drawing to painting to photography and printmaking.
Gallery hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 9:00 p.m., and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All exhibits are free and open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
