The Piedmont Athens Regional Foundation invites the community to submit nominations for the 2019 J.W. Fanning Humanitarian of the Year Award, honoring J.W. Fanning, who was the University of Georgia’s (UGA) first Vice President for Services and dedicated his life to community service in Georgia.

The award honors others in the Athens-area and surrounding communities who share Fanning’s commitment to community service. Fanning also served on the Board of Directors for Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

This year’s award marks the 30th anniversary since its start. The award recipient will be honored at this year’s Honoring Philanthropy Dinner event, which will take place on Friday, Sept. 13 at the Classic Center in Athens.

Each year, the Piedmont Athens Regional Foundation presents the J.W. Fanning Humanitarian of the Year Award to an individual who:

·         Has made significant contributions to Piedmont Athens Regional through time, interest and commitment to the Medical Center and community,

·         Has made significant contributions as a volunteer of community service that improves the health, welfare and quality of life for area residents,

·         Is a member of the local community, an active or retired physician, a current or former member of the hospital of foundation’s Board of Directors, or a Piedmont Athens Regional Foundation committee member,

·         And is not an employee of Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center or its healthcare system.

Last year’s J.W. Fanning Humanitarian of the Year Award was presented to Oconee County resident Tom Cooney, Ph.D., for his extensive years of volunteer service to Piedmont Athens Regional’s Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.
