Boulevard Woods Park Phase Two Now Open

Staff Report From Athens CEO

Thursday, April 25th, 2019

The second phase of construction at Boulevard Woods Park is complete and all areas of the park, including a new play area and gathering place, are open to the public.

Boulevard Woods Park, located at 298 Barber St, is part of the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department park system. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Work on the second phase began in October 2018 through a partnership between the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, Boulevard Neighborhood Association (BNA), Riverview Foundation, Koons Environmental Design, Inc.; Athens Land Trust; Cultivation, LLC, and many local residents. This same partnership worked to establish phase one in 2016.

The park has evolved since first opening in 2016. In 2017, volunteers dug a looped trail in the park, and then a crew from the Southeastern Conservation Corps added trail steps. The park’s new play area includes balance logs, a slide, climbing steps and a geodesic dome. The new gathering place is a rustic semi-circle of seating logs around a small, gravel-covered stage. Additional amenities include two new benches, an extended paved path, a picnic table, a stormwater/rain garden area, and new connections to the existing looped trail that extends further into the woods.

Upcoming improvements include the installation of public art, and to begin work on a native plant and tree landscaping project in the wooded part of the park.
