Georgia DOT has awarded 16 construction contracts for statewide transportation projects totaling $79,665,278. The resurfacing, bridge and safety projects included in the award were advertised on November 16, bids were received on December 14 and contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidder on December 28. 

The largest single investment is a $30.9 million contract to resurface and rehabilitate 25.9 miles of roadway on Interstate 85/State Route, from the Alabama state line to SR 219 (Exit 13/ Whitesfield Road). This contract was awarded to C. W. Matthews Contracting Co., Inc., and is one of 11 resurfacing projects across the state, representing 82 percent of the awarded December funds, or $65 million. 

Bridge contracts represent 16 percent of the awarded funds, or $12.5 million. A $2.85 million contract was awarded for a project that will construct a 0.36 mile bridge on SR 82 over north Oconee River in Jackson County. The remaining $9.65 million of the awarded funds are for three separate contracts for bridge rehabilitation at various locations in Douglas, Glynn, Jackson, Floyd and Haralson counties.

Crews will rehabilitate the bridge deck, straighten damaged steel beams and paint steel substructure on the SR 1 ramp over SR 20 WB in Floyd County and on SR 8 over Tallapoosa River in Haralson County. The US 25/SR 17 bridge over the Brunswick River in Glynn County will undergo cable repair, bridge deck repair, deck expansion and sealant replacements, and repair of erosion. The rehabilitation of six bridges on I-20 in Douglas County will consist of deck preservation, strengthening and painting of steel beams at the various locations along the bridge.

The remaining two percent of the awarded funds, or $2 million, represents a safety project to improve multiple intersections on SR 42/US 23 in DeKalb and Fulton counties.

The December awards bring the total construction contracts for Fiscal Year 2019 to $355 million. Fiscal Year 2019 began July 1, 2018.
