ACC Leisure Services Team Members Win Gold at Special Olympics State Tournament

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department recently sent a team to participate in the Special Olympics of Georgia Masters Bowling Tournament. This annual event was held August 17-18 in Warner Robins.

Team members Emerson Fulton, Melinda Jones, Nicole Sells, James Smith, and Charity Ruark all earned gold medals.

The rest of the 12-member squad comprised of Riad Akhras, Isabel Alpaugh, Kevin Duvalier, Nancy Howard, Brian Kimbell, Jennifer McGrath, and Brayton Oschack, participated with distinction.
Athletes were required to prequalify for the state games, completing several months of training and planning. Athletes submitted their averages from practices for the state competition.

Leisure Services offers Special Olympics Bowling throughout the year that culminates in this tournament trip. Additionally, the Department offers and supports year round programs that are inclusive for all individuals with or without disabilities. There are programs specific for individuals with developmental disabilities including Monologues and More, an entry level drama program, and an Adaptive Sports program which focuses on skills development.
