Attorney General Chris Carr announced that the state of Georgia is taking an active role, working with a large group of other states, to investigate the issues surrounding the Equifax data breach.

“Our primary responsibility is to protect the consumers of Georgia, millions of whom, through no fault of their own, have had their personal information compromised,” said Attorney General Chris Carr. “As part of our duty to protect the interests of the people of Georgia, we are committed to determining exactly what happened and who are the cyber criminals targeting our companies and our personal data. At times like these, consumers are angry about what has happened and they are scared and confused about what to do. We must keep their needs at the forefront and do all we can to assist them, and we must commit to learning the facts – which is why we joined this effort.”

While the investigation is ongoing, consumers can take steps to freeze or monitor their credit reports, bank accounts and credit card statements. As they do this, they should feel free to report any suspicious activity to our Consumer Protection Unit immediately.
