Representative Emory Dunahoo (R-Gainesville) recently filed House Bill 543, the Georgia FairTax Act, legislation that would convert Georgia’s tax code from a state income tax to a statewide consumption based tax system.

“It’s time Georgia boosted its economic growth with an incentive that benefits everybody without our government picking winners and losers,” said Rep. Dunahoo. “This bill has tremendous grassroots support and creates enormous opportunity across the board. Last year, I traveled across Georgia speaking about this legislation, and nearly every citizen I spoke to agreed that this type of tax reform was a ‘no-brainer.’”

The FairTax Act would reform and simplify Georgia’s tax law by only allowing for the taxation of goods and services consumed or used in Georgia as opposed to taxing personal and business earnings, effective January 1, 2019. This legislation would increase the state sales tax to account for lost state revenue at a rate that would allow Georgia to take in as much revenue as before this measure becomes law.
