Georgia Sports Hall of Fame to Induct Class of 2017 on February 25th in Macon
Friday, February 17th, 2017
On Saturday, February 25th, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame will enshrine football player Keith Brooking, golfer Laura Coble, tennis coach Manuel Diaz, football and track athlete Willie Gault, basketball player Matt Harpring, football player Garrison Hearst, athletic leader/golf coach Liz Murphey, and football player Jeff Saturday. The weekend will begin with the GSHF Golf Classic at Idle Hour Country Club on Friday, February 24th; the GSHF’s annual FanFest will be held Saturday afternoon at the museum. These outstanding athletes and contributors to sport were selected for induction by the GSHF Honors Court at their meeting in September.
The ceremony returns to the historic Macon City Auditorium in Downtown Macon and will be the finale of a weekend full of events beginning with the GSHF Golf Classic on Friday morning. A limited number of tickets are still available for the Induction Ceremony Banquet and can be purchased by calling the Hall of Fame offices.
Phil Schaefer will serve as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies. Schaefer is a 2016 Georgia Sports Hall of Fame inductee and long time sportscaster. He’s provided commentary for numerous sporting events including University of Georgia football and basketball games, Atlanta Hawks games, The Masters golf tournament, and the NCAA Basketball Tournament. A three-time Georgia Sportscaster of the Year, Schaefer also served as the public-address announcer for the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Hawks.
FanFest will be held at the Hall of Fame Museum on Saturday, February 25th, and admission is free all day. The GSHF Museum is located at 301 Cherry Street in Downtown Macon. From 1:00-2:30pm, the members of the Class of 2017 and approximately twenty previously inducted Hall of Famers will be on hand to greet fans, take pictures, and sign autographs. We will have activities for the kids and Francar’s Food Truck on site all afternoon. This will also be the first opportunity to view the museum’s exhibits honoring the members of the Class of 2017.
