Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded 22 contracts for statewide transportation projects totaling $45,010,280. Projects were advertised for bids in September, bids were received in October and contracts were awarded on November 4.

This month Georgia DOT continues to heavily focus on preserving existing infrastructure with 14 awards totaling $34.9 million for resurfacing and maintenance on 99 miles of state highways; and seven contracts totaling $9.5 million for rehabilitation of 31 bridges and construction of two bridges.

“It has long been acknowledged that Georgia DOT has always done a good job with the resources that were available,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. “Now, with the revenue resulting from the Transportation Funding Act of 2015, we are able to significantly address maintenance that was previously deferred. Our goal is to restore a 15-year resurfacing cycle instead of the 50-year cycle we faced in 2014.”

The highest valued contract awarded is a 14-mile resurfacing on I-75/SR 401 in Lowndes County in South Georgia. The roadway, last resurfaced over 10 years ago, shows signs of degradation due to the more than 40,000 vehicles that travel this section each day. Resurfacing will repair portions that are disintegrating and improve drainage to reduce hydroplaning. Another safety benefit is better driver visibility in wet weather due to reduced spray from tires. The project, valued at $10.6 million, was awarded to The Scruggs Company of Hahira, Ga. The anticipated completion date is September 30, 2017.

Since FY 17 began July 1, contracts have been awarded for resurfacing of 592 miles of interstates and state routes, representing an investment of over $184 million. In FY 16, the Department resurfaced 941 miles valued at $688 million.
