Credit unions in Georgia and across the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day this week, a tradition that has been held on the third Thursday of October since 1948.

The day is recognized to reflect upon the history and achievements of credit unions. It is a day to honor those who have dedicated their lives to the movement, recognize the diligence of those working in the credit union industry and to show members appreciation.

This year's theme is "The Authentic Difference" and ICU Day celebrates the unique philosophy credit unions uphold, to help people afford life. Credit unions and associations will celebrate the day with charitable fundraisers, open houses, contests, picnics, parades and parties.
 
Some of the authentic differences are that credit unions return profits to their members through lower loan rates and higher returns on savings. Because of their cooperative, not-for-profit business model, credit unions provide the same products and services as other financial institutions, but put members' needs first, unlike other financial institutions that exist to make a profit.

Gov. Nathan Deal has declared October 20, 2016 as Credit Union Day in Georgia. The proclamation reads that credit unions have "demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities throughout the communities in which they serve since they were founded in the United States more than 100 years ago. Credit unions have implemented the idea that people with middle-class aspirations should have access to a trusted financial partner that operates with their best interest in mind."
