Randy Reid, the chairman for the humanities department at Athens Academy, was announced as the winner of the 2016 award for excellence in educational use of historical records for his class, “Learning About Home: Original Historical Research on Athens-Clarke County.”

The Georgia Archives in Marrow will hold an award ceremony Oct. 26 for Reid, who has been a faculty member for 29 years at Athens Academy.

In the class, students investigate the history of the local area using historical documents at the University of Georgia’s Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library and use their projects to offer as applicable historical works. Students present their findings to professional historians and digitize their research to encourage tourism to Athens.

The course works with the Athens Academy Humanities Department, the UGA History Department, the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts at UGA and with students from Putnam County High School.

The award is given by the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council, which promotes the educational use of Georgia’s history.
