Dr. Jana McKenzie Joins St. Mary's Medical Group

Jana McKenzie, MD, an internal medicine physician who has been in private practice in Watkinsville since 2010, has joined St. Mary's Medical Group effective Monday, Sept. 26.

"I am a strong advocate for a committed doctor-patient relationship to achieve our mutual goal of optimal health," says Dr. McKenzie, who provides care to adults age 18 and over. "Joining St. Mary's Medical Group allows me to devote more of my time and attention to providing care for my patients."

As a primary care physician, Dr. McKenzie strives to create a relationship with patients that promotes trust and communication. She has extensive experience in cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology and diabetes. She notes, "As an internal medicine physician, I have to be well-educated on taking care of everything from the common cold to a heart attack. In addition, I perform complete female examinations, skin and cosmetic procedures."

A highlight of her office is "Nurse Lilly", Dr. McKenzie's trained Labrador therapy dog. Nurse Lilly comes to work with Dr. McKenzie everyday to help patients relax and feel welcome.

Dr. McKenzie came to Watkinsville from south Florida, where she practiced with Tenet Physician Services in Pompano Beach, Citrus Medical Associates in Inverness, and Brevard Health Care in Melbourne from 1998 until 2010.

Board-certified in internal medicine, Dr. McKenzie earned her bachelor's degree in psychology with high distinction from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and her doctor's degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio. While in medical school, she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, a medical honor society open only to the top 10 percent of the graduating class. She then completed an internship in internal medicine at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham and her internal medicine residency at University of Cincinnati Hospital.

In addition, Dr. McKenzie served as a research assistant with the University of Michigan Department of General Medicine and Psychology and also with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine's Department of Neurology. She, her husband, and their two children reside in Statham.
