Sports Stars Team up to Benefit Good Samaritan Hospital at Legends on the Links Golf Tournament
Monday, August 1st, 2016
For former World Series Most Valuable Player Bucky Dent, baseball is a game of moments. One moment can shift the momentum of a game or define a career. For the past 32 years, Dent has been defined by one such moment: the moment in 1984 when he and his friend Larry Hoskin started Legends on the Links, a charity golf tournament that is dedicated to providing financial support to various community organizations.
For the third year in a row, their Legends on the Links tournament will be held at the beautiful Reynolds Lake Oconee and will benefit St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital.
"Bucky Dent and Larry Hoskins have been tremendous supporters of Good Samaritan Hospital," said hospital foundation board chair Jack Brown. "We appreciate all they have done and continue to do to support quality healthcare right here in the greater Greene County community."
This year’s Legends on the Links honorees will be Baseball Hall of Famer James "Jim Ed" Rice, who played 16 seasons with the Boston Red Sox and was the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1978, and motivational speaker Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger, a former University of Notre Dame football player who was the inspiration for the 1993 blockbuster movie “Rudy”.
Other celebrities joining Dent and Hoskins at this year's tournament will be:
-
Rick Cerone, who played with multiple major league teams, including the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves
-
Gerry Cooney, former heavyweight boxer who took the ring against other boxing greats such as Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks and George Foreman.
-
Mike Fischlin, who played for the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves
-
Ryan Klesko, who is best known for his nine seasons with the Atlanta Braves, including their 1995 World Series championship
-
Tino Martinez, who played for the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Devil Rays
-
Lou Piniella, who played with the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees but is best known for his work as a manager, including 10 seasons with the Seattle Mariners
Legends on the Links will be a two-day event including a cookout/cocktail party with music, dinner, dancing, and silent and live auctions at the Sandy Creek Barn on Sunday, Oct. 23, and the shotgun-start golf tournament at the Oconee Course, Reynolds Lake Oconee, on Monday, Oct. 24.
A limited number of tickets will be available for the cookout/cocktail party, and the tournament is expected to be a sell-out again this year. Sponsorship will provide businesses with opportunities to demonstrate their support for the community, attend the pre-tournament party and play with a celebrity.
For more information about sponsorship opportunities or the golf tournament, please contact Foundation Director Crysty Odom at 706.389.3926 or [email protected]. All proceeds from the tournament will be used to support the Mission and services of St. Mary' Good Samaritan Hospital.
