Bob Yager, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Athens, was awarded the George F. Hixson Fellowship in recognition of his diligent work in raising funds through the Birchmore Run for Fun Memorial Race.

During the several years Yager served as chairman, proceeds from the race have at least tripled. Last year’s proceeds of more than $12,000 were by far the most ever raised from the race and, according to long-time Kiwanian Larry Dendy, probably the largest amount the nearly 100-year-old Athens club has ever raised through a fundraising project.

In addition, Yager has been a dedicated volunteer in a variety of outreach activities with the Kiwanis Club of Athens, including at Stroud Elementary School.

All of the proceeds of the race were used to support Athens area programs that benefit children.

The Hixson Fellowship was established in 1983 by the Kiwanis International Foundation as a way of recognizing individuals who have contributed significantly to the Kiwanis’ history of generosity.

“Bob certainly lives out the Kiwanis mission through his volunteerism in the community and his unstinting support of our club,” Dendy said.

Yager is shown receiving the Hixson medal from Kiwanis Lieutenant Gov. Lauri Ann Brooks.
