Athens-Clarke Continuing to Tweak Changes to Dougherty Street
Thursday, June 16th, 2016
Athens-Clarke County transportation officials are continuing to tweak the recently completed reconfiguration of Dougherty Street in the northern edge of downtown, according to Steve Decker, the county’s traffic engineer.
The work, done in March while University of Georgia students were on spring break, transformed what had been a four-lane thoroughfare — from Thomas Street on the eastern edge of the downtown area several blocks west to Pulaski Street on the opposite edge of downtown — into a two-lane route, with some turn lanes. Additionally, dozens of on-street parallel parking spaces were placed in what had been travel lanes on both sides of the street.
