Athens-Clarke Commissioners Steer $9,000 to July 1st Downtown Fireworks
Thursday, June 23rd, 2016
After eight years of not allocating any public dollars for a local Fourth of July celebration, Athens-Clarke County commissioners on Tuesday voted to steer $9,000 in hotel-motel tax revenue to a last-minute effort to bring fireworks and an accompanying festival to downtown Athens on July 1.
In a special called meeting Tuesday, commissioners voted 6-1 to allocate the $9,000 to an effort being spearheaded by Pamela Thompson, executive director of the Athens Downtown Development Authority, to host an Independence Day holiday weekend event in downtown Athens, with fireworks set to be launched from The Classic Center parking deck.
