Local Athens Elections Board Concerned about State Change in Voter Registration Policy
Thursday, May 5th, 2016
The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections voted unanimously Tuesday to send a letter to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office expressing concern about the office’s recent announcement that it is no longer observing a 90-day “black-out” period following voter registration deadlines during which it had not processed voter registration applications.
The practice dated back to when voter registration applications were solely on paper, and was designed to keep ineligible voters from casting ballots. The secretary of state’s office recently argued, though, that today’s computerized voter registration system prevents voting by ineligible voters.
