With a society that is increasingly concerned with the state of the environment, all industries must find new ways to reduce their carbon footprint and "go green." For the trucking industry in particular, there are a variety of ways in which to accomplish this. TeamOne Logistics discusses four steps the trucking industry has been taking to become more environmentally friendly:

  1. Speed reduction. When a transportation company saves on fuel, less fumes are emitted into the atmosphere as a result. With just a five mile per hour decrease in the cruising speed of each vehicle, the harmful emissions released into the environment can be reduced through improved fuel mileage.

  2. Engine controls. To prevent engine idling, which wastes fuel and increases harmful emissions into the Earth's atmosphere, engines with automatic shutoff continue to make an appearance in the trucking industry. On-board auxiliary power systems are installed to prevent the use of the engine for heating and cooling purposes.

  3. Alternative fuel sources. Diesel-electric hybrids use up to thirty percent less fuel than standard diesel engines. Electric energy sources, as well as all-natural vegetable and legume sources, have been notably incorporated into company fleets as well.

  4. Efficient equipment. The engine is not the only piece of equipment that affects the fuel output. Cargo weight reduction through addendum of carbon-fiber trailers, energy efficient LED lighting, and low-rolling resistance tires with proper pressure monitoring systems all contribute to accomplishing the goal of reducing the industry's impact on the environment.
