Staff Report From Athens CEO

Friday, February 5th, 2016

St. Mary's Heath Care System is launching a partnership with the American Lung Association of Georgia to bring the Better Breathers Club to St. Mary's in Athens.

“I want everyone in Northeast Georgia to know that resources are available to people affected by lung disease," said Michele Johnson, M.H.A., RRT, Manager of Respiratory Care and Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation for St. Mary’s Hospital. "With education, support and resources, we hope to reduce the number of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease re-admissions and emergency room visits. Members will learn ways to help cope with their condition.”

The Better Breathers Club has helped those with chronic lung conditions such as COPD, asthma and other chronic lung diseases for nearly 30 years. A trained facilitator will lead each session to provide support and information for those who suffer from chronic lung diseases and their caregivers.

The goal of the club is to empower those suffering from chronic lung conditions by teaching them better coping mechanisms. The club addresses a variety of topics including exercise, how COPD affects the lungs, breathing techniques, air pollution and more.

Meetings will be held at St. Mary's Hospital, 1230 Baxter St., Athens, on the third Thursday of every month at 2 p.m., starting Feb. 18. Meetings are free, will last one hour, and will provide support, education and social connection for those with lung disease and their family members and caregivers.
