With little fanfare, Athens-Clarke County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday in a special called meeting to appoint Assistant Athens-Clarke County Manager Blaine Williams as the county’s acting manager upon the Feb. 6 retirement of current Athens-Clarke County Manager Alan Reddish.

Reddish, who was appointed county manager in 2001, announced his pending retirement in November, calling his time in the position office “a rewarding and challenging professional journey that most managers could only hope to experience” and saying he plans to pursue part-time opportunities for an “encore career” and spend more time with his grandchildren. In a message to county government staff members in this month’s county government newsletter, Reddish adds he and his wife, Carol, “expect to remain a part of this great community for the foreseeable future.”
